The Author
The Story Behind Steven T. Duff.
A quiet observer of small towns, second chances, and the secrets that hide in plain sight. This is how a lifelong reader became the writer behind Ivy Hill.

"I write the books I wish were already on my own shelf. Clever, cozy, and quietly devastating."
Meet the Author
Steven T. Duff.
Storyteller. Quiet observer of small towns and the secrets they keep.
Steven grew up in a house where the porch light stayed on for whichever neighbor needed to talk, and where every family gathering eventually turned into someone retelling a story that had grown a little taller with each passing year. That was his first classroom in suspense: learning how much a pause, a raised eyebrow, or a withheld detail could do to a room full of listeners.
He believes a mystery should always play fair: every clue in plain sight, every red herring earned, the truth assembled by a reader who was paying attention. Nothing is hidden behind a trick the reader couldn't have seen coming. The pleasure is in the noticing, not the surprise alone.
His people matter as much as his plots. Florists, bakers, retired teachers, and gallery curators all seem to live ordinary lives until something extraordinary comes to light. The town becomes a character in its own right, and readers tend to stay for the people long after the case is closed.
When he isn't writing, Steven is usually the one refilling everyone's coffee, wandering flea markets for objects with a story already built into them, or taking the long way through a town he's never visited just to see what it might hide.
The Ivy Hill Flower Shop Mysteries are the flagship, the best place to meet his voice for the first time. But they're far from the only secrets he's written.
The Writing Journey
From notebook margins to Ivy Hill
The Notebook Years
A habit before it was a craft
Long before a single manuscript existed, Steven kept notebooks full of overheard conversations, odd town names, and the kind of small-town gossip that always seemed to have a second layer underneath it.
The First Draft
Writing the book he wanted to read
Frustrated that his favorite genre so rarely combined a genuinely fair-play puzzle with characters worth lingering over, Steven wrote the book he'd been searching for instead. It became the first case in Ivy Hill.
Finding Ivy Hill
A town that wouldn’t let go
What began as a single setting grew into a whole map: a flower shop, a bakery, a gallery, a garden club, each with its own secrets. Readers kept asking to come back, so Steven kept finding reasons for them to.
Today
Still following the clues
Every new mystery starts the same way it always has: a curious detail, a town Steven can't stop thinking about, and a cast of characters who insist on telling him what really happened.
Where the Stories Begin
The inspiration behind every cozy mystery
Steven's mysteries rarely start with a murder. They start with a place, a person, or an overheard line that won't stop nagging at him until it becomes a story.
Small towns
Every setting starts as a real place Steven has walked through — a Main Street, a courthouse square, a shop with a bell over the door. Ivy Hill is invented, but it is built from a hundred towns like it.
Ordinary people
The florist, the retired teacher, the gallery curator: Steven collects the quiet dignity of people who show up to work every day, then wonders what they might be hiding behind the counter.
Overheard conversations
A line caught at a diner counter or a church potluck often becomes the seed of a plot. Steven keeps a notebook in his coat pocket for exactly this reason.
Fair-play puzzles
Classic detective fiction taught Steven the rules of the game — plant every clue, earn every twist. He writes toward that same promise: you could have solved it, if you'd looked closely enough.
